Twitter Overview
Top Marketers know that Twitter is THE social networking tool that can do so much to build their business. So what is Twitter?
Twitter is a social networking tool (it’s free) that allows you to post 140 character messages anytime to your “Followers” (list). It is easy to create a huge list of “Followers” (we’ll show you how with the tools below) so that you can have a lot of exposure to your business.
Twitter also has a “Search” tool that allows you to do searches on anything and save your searches. For example, you can do a search to learn about competitors, prospects, a specific topic or anything. You can even save up to 10 search terms so that you can quickly do a new search on a topic you search frequently.
Let’s say you want to see what “tweets” (term for Twitter messages) people are posting for the term “home based business”. You would simply type in “home based business” (include the quotation marks if you want the entire phrase searched) and you’ll immediately see the search results for people who have posted a message (tweet) that included that term.
The power of searching on Twitter is that you can find people in real time talking about virtually any topic, and add them to your “Followers” list.
If you don’t have a Twitter account, go to Twitter.com to sign up for one right now. Once you sign up, make sure you create a Username (you can edit it later so don’t worry about it when you get started) that will motivate people to click on your username to go to your account. For example, “SuccessfulStayAtHomeMom” or something like that.
Once you sign up, you want to add your picture and a bio about yourself which you can do from the “Settings” link at the top of the page. Make sure you include a link to your website in the Bio about yourself which you can find once you click on the Settings link.
Once you have set up your account (including your picture and bio that includes a link to your website) then as an option (but it will help) you want to set up a professional Twitter background with free tools like www.twitbacks.com or www.mytweetspace.com.
Then go to www.tweetlater.com to use an amazing free service that will allow you to send automated welcome messages to new followers and create settings that will automatically follow those who follow you or “unfollow” (stop following) those who do not follow you.
The goal of Twitter is to build a large list (followers) and then send them valuable content on a regular basis so they see you as a valuable person. When that happens, they are much more likely to click on a link to go to your website when you send them a link to it.
A way to share valuable content with others is to go to Google Reader which you can find at www.google.com/reader.
Google Reader will allow you to find up to the moment very valuable information on any topic that you can then easily send to your Twitter Followers. We’ll create a video for you on how to do this but for now, want you to get the vision that you can first go to Google Reader, find valuable information, click on a link and then forward it to your Twitter followers.
Without knowing it, your followers will think you are an expert at whatever content you are sending them.
Other important things to know about Twitter, DO NOT SPAM … meaning if you are only telling people about your business all the time, they will stop following you. Your success with Twitter is dependent upon your ability to share valuable content and information with your network. Some things that people like to know about included:
* Important News
* Something Funny
* Something Educational
* Something that helps them grow their business
* Many other topics (just get creative and on Google Reader you can search for topics to subscribe to and receive the latest information on any topic).
